Samba in Cornwall

Samba has exploded in Cornwall over the last 4 years.  In 2002 there was only one samba group, 'White Noise', based in Truro and run by Sean Hooper.  In January this year the following samba ensembles, mostly based in schools, were up and running:

  • White Noise, Truro

  • Sambalanda (Richard Lander, Truro)

  • Penair School Samba Band, Truro

  • Falmouth Community School Samba Band

  • Penryn College Samba Band

  • Pencalenick School Samba Band, Tresillian

  • Uncle Samba (Treviglas, Newquay)

  • Sambatazz (Tretherras, Newquay)

  • Roskear Samba Band, Camborne

  • Seriously Samba (Porthleven Junior)

  • Sambandana (Pennoweth Primary, Redruth)

  • Penryn Junior School

  • Troon Junior School, Camborne

  • Hayle Storm Samba Band (Hayle Community School)

  • Sir James Smith, Camelford

  • Picante, Pencoys Junior School, Four Lanes

There have been various occasions over the last few years when we have been able to put together ensembles in excess of 200 players, thus replicating the size of a Brazilian 'bloco' or percussion section.  The most notable example was in 2004 when we organised 'Encontro Atlantico 2004' in St. Ives, West Cornwall, and hosted bands from as far afield as Brighton and Scotland, culminating on an attempt on the World Record for largest percussion ensemble - see photo top left.

As well as performing as a 'bateria' (percussion section) we have accompanied many different musicians.  'Uncle Samba' in Newquay have their own 'Fabulous Rio Horn Section', who perform regularly with them, and at Truro's 'City Of Lights' in late November 2005 a bateria of 250 accompanied some Celtic musicians performing traditional Cornish music.  The first weekend of September saw Truro Carnival 2006, with workshops, busking in the streets, and a grand finale with Carnival Parade and mass play in Truro's Lemon Quay.

Here are some charts of the samba we teach in schools in Cornwall.  They are available in PDF format as this avoids clashes between versions of software.  If you would like a tab form of a Sibelius file, or would like to receive it as a picture-type file, please contact the webmaster.
